By Popular Demand: The WildPlay Co Playdough Recipe That Works EVERY Time

Are you looking for a playdough recipe that is easy to make and is fail safe? Look no further! We make a HEAP of playdough here at WildPlay Co as the kids who attend our programs love it but because of that, we are always having to replace our playdough to keep it fresh and fun. The great news is that once you have some super basic ingredients in your pantry and you follow our special tips and tricks, you can turn this playdough out in 5 minutes!

What you’ll need

2 cups of plain flour

3/4 cup of salt

4 tsp of cream of tartar

2 tbsp of oil

2 cups of lukewarm water

Time-saving hack

Put all of your dry ingredients into a zip lock bag and store in the cupboard for the next time you need to make some fresh playdough. This saves heaps of time and means you don’t have to get flour everywhere each time you make a fresh batch of playdough. Future you is going to to so happy!!

Step 1

Grab your zip lock bag of dry ingredients and pop into a saucepan OR combine your dry ingredients all together if you were too lazy last time you made a batch to prepare another!

Step 2

Add in oil followed by water and stir over moderate heat

Step 3

Now is the time to add in any colour that you want to use to colour the playdough. We LOVE colouring our playdough with the 100% plant based and environmentally friendly eco-paints but you can also use food colouring or even experiment with your own food-based dyes.

Step 4

You know your playdough is done when it comes away from the sides of the saucepan and is no longer sticky to the touch. This doesn’t take long, 1-2 minutes. When this happens, turn the playdough out onto a cutting board and let cool.

Step 5

Pop your playdough out with your childs favourite resources. Some of our faves at WildPlay Co are the bio cutters from The Koori Curriculum and the Japily Aboriginal Symbol Stamps and Flashcards from Songlines Art Culture Education. Or if you prefer to keep things simple (which we often do), put a little dish of natures loose parts out with the playdough like gum nuts, feathers, acorns and seed pods and watch the magic happen. Better yet, go foraging with your little explorer and find some special treasures together.

And there you have it – a simple, fail-safe recipe that’s ready in minutes and sure to keep your little ones engaged for hours. And if you love this, you’ll be over the moon to read all about how to make mud playdough. Can you believe that it’s even simpler than this?

Happy playing!
